Could face shields replace masks in preventing COVID-19?

As our country tries to return to normal these summer months, one thing is abundantly clear.  Workers are still required to wear PPE and when the weather gets warmer, it’s hard to stay cool wearing face coverings especially when working outside in the heat.

Grocery store employees, restaurant workers and those in the service industry all have the same complaints. Face masks are hot, uncomfortable, and prevent clear communication. Many times those wearing face masks pull them down below the nose or under the mouth to breathe better or for clearer communication. Which basically makes the mask useless, but there is a better way.

 FACE MASK

  • Not made of recyclable materials

  • Difficult to disinfect at home

  • Difficult to communicate or talk to others while wearing

  • Limited durabiity

  • Requires touching your face to put on or adjust

  • Not comfortable, difficult to breathe in

  • Wearer often pulls down mask & leans in to speak

  • Creates weird tan lines

  • Cannot eat or drink while wearing mask

  • Difficult to recognize when wearing

FACE SHIELD

  • Made of recyclable materials

  • Easily disinfected with household cleaners

  • Makes lip reading possible for the deaf/hard of hearing

  • Easily washed or re-used

  • Prevents wearer from touching their face

  • Lightweight, comfortable to wear and breathe in

  • Reinforces the importance of physical distancing

  • Prevents weird tan lines

  • Allows for eating and drinking while wearing the shield

  • Allows wearer to be recognized

According to Duke University Medical Center’s recent article in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology , “Face shields would not be hindered by the circumstances that make commonly used face masks sometimes problematic. Face shields provide better coverage of the face, as compared to masks, thus reducing the risk of self-contamination. Additionally, face shields are durable, can be cleaned and reused repeatedly. Given their simpler design, durability, and reuse potential, face shields are less likely to face shortages like face masks. Additionally, face shields do not impede facial nonverbal communication, can be worn concurrently with other face/eye protective equipment and do not impact vocalization. Whereas, face masks can be lost or, worse, contaminated during long work shifts and actually increase the risk of getting COVID-19. In addition, they might encourage a false sense of security that leads to lax hand hygiene and social distancing.”

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health placed a face shield on a breathing robot and had another robot 18 inches away “cough out” a flu virus. The shield prevented the breathing robot from inhaling 96 percent of the virus within five minutes. In additional tests, the shield’s effectiveness varied based on the size of droplets expelled, but the overall indication was that shields can protect their wearers from other people’s germs. From the posts I have put on FB and from the people I have met, I have sold a ton of the wonderful face shields.

I have sold to couples where the husband distributed his own product...

I have sold to teachers who are worried about going back into the class in the fall and not being able to connect with kids, especially younger ones.

I have talked to speech therapists who can’t work without seeing the patients.

And I have sold to synagogues where people would rather pray in face shields than in silly, slimy masks.

AND - the super biggie - people don’t want to go to restaurants and have to take their masks off to eat.

I can even down an ice cream cone or sip a drink in my face shield (as long as I remember it’s on).

Bottom line - I have only a few left and people are calling - even my Paychex rep wants them!

Face Shields for the Hospitality Industry

LOVE LOVE LOVE my shield from BROWN INNOVATIONS and so does my crew. They. Are. Awesome. Knowing you can wear a hat with them is huge and at just the correct angle, you can keep this on AND have a rib tip. So wrong, it’s right!

Face Shields for Dentists and Front Line Workers

Your face shields are lightweight, durable, and very comfortable to wear for long periods of time (unlike other low-quality face shields on the market). They have what feels like a “memory foam” built into the headband that ensures it fits snuggly to your head while also keeping it from applying too much pressure in any one area.
My colleagues and I couldn’t be happier with our purchase and feel better protected now because of it. I’d recommend this product to all healthcare professionals on the front lines of this pandemic.
— -Jon Eli RN BSN, Dignity Health Northridge Hospital
Your face shields are the best that we have tried, and we have tried many. They are well built and very comfortable, and we are finding that they are lasting much longer than many other inferior products. Good PPE is hard to find right now, so keep up the great work!
— Christopher T. Binder, DMD
I like these face shields a lot. We just bought 1000.
— Lori Lerner, Deputy Chief, Surgical Services at VA Boston
My ER group purchased Brown Innovations face shields. The consensus from all the doctors was, they were the favorite. The shield was the only one that form fit with a tight seal on the forehead. I highly recommend this product.
— Tony Buscaglia, Emergency Medicine Physican, Niagra Falls Memorial Medical Center
This is great! I love it! So much more comfortable than any other face shields out there.
